Yellow pine (Pino pece)

Origin: southern-eastern part of United States.

Latin name.
Pinus Palustris.

Natural vegetation area.
Southern-eastern States of the United States down to the Gulf of Mexico and Greater Antilles.

TRUNK CHARACTERISTICS.
Trees with a rather rapid growth reaching heights of 25-27 metres, with diameter at breast height of 70-80 cm. In the forests treated according to good forestry practices, the trunks are thin, straight and with regular sections.

WOOD APPEARANCE AND CHARACTERISTICS.
The sapwood is whitish or yellowish or rosy, clearly distinguishable from the yellow-reddish or honey dark brown heartwood, which is always very resinous so that it often features big pockets full of this secretion.

Specific weight.
In the fresh condition 800 kg/m3 on average; after normal seasoning 620 kg/m3.

Histological structure.
Medium texture; mostly straight but not very regular grain, especially in close proximity to the insertions of the bigger branches, where the texture is sometimes impregnated with resin.

Mechanical characteristics.
Axial compression strength 54 N/mm2 on average; bending strength 95 N/mm2; medium hardness; the impact behaviour is moderate.

Modulus of elasticity.
12.5000 N/mm2.

Most frequent structural defects and alteration.
Considerable ring thickness heterogeneity; presence of compression wood; resin pockets or total wood impregnation with resin. This latter case causes working difficulties, resin bleed and particular fragility in case of dynamic stresses.

Durability.
Mediocre for the types with lighter wood, somewhat better for the types with heavier wood.
